Test format of General Training

For the Academic and General IELTS Tests, Task 1 is different. IELTS's Academic Test entails analyzing and explaining graphs, charts, diagrams and maps, while the General Test involves writing a letter responding to a question. As a result, the IELTS writing practice tests are designed accordingly.

Essay questions makeup both Academic and General Writing Task 2 in IELTS, for which at least 250 words are needed.

The IELTS General Training test is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total time for the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

  • The Listening section consists of four parts, each lasting about 10 minutes. You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and answer 40 questions.
  • The Reading section consists of three parts. You will have 60 minutes to read a variety of texts and answer 40 questions.
  • The Writing section has two parts. In the first part, you will need to write a letter in response to a given situation. In the second part, you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, an argument, or a problem. You will have 60 minutes to complete both tasks.
  • The Speaking section is a conversation between you and a certified examiner. It is divided into three parts. In the first part, you will answer questions about yourself. In the second part, you will be asked to speak about a particular topic. In the third part, you will have a short discussion with the examiner. The entire section will last about 11-14 minutes.

Preparing for the IELTS General Training test can be a daunting task. However, with enough practice and focus, you can definitely ace the test!
