Describing a table

Learn how to summarise information in a table and write a report on the main features.
Definition

There are rows and columns in a table. A cell is the point where a row and a column meet. Tables have many more functions in addition to being frequently used to arrange and present information. Tables can be used to arrange numbers in columns, sort them, and compute them.

Tips
  • Describe the information that was first displayed. Avoid using the same exact words as the question if you are writing in an exam, for example. The table presents some fascinating information about some of the most widely studied languages in the world.
  • Give a summary of the information's key components in the second paragraph.
  • Pick up the most important patterns and observations. You don't have to go into great detail in your writing.
  • Your observations should be broken up into paragraphs that focus on various parts of the data. Sometimes a conclusion paragraph is not required.
  • Avoid using your own general knowledge to explain the data or to add more details than are displayed. You merely need to summarize and report the
information in the question. Use a variety of structures for:
  1. making comparisons, e.g. slightly more than, by far the highest, as … as, compared to, double the number of, correlation between
  2. approximating, e.g. nearly, roughly, almost
  3. stating what you are referring to, e.g. in terms of … , as for … , of those given.

The table presents some fascinating information about some of the most widely studied languages in the world. It permits comparisons between individuals who study a language and those who speak it as a first language and displays the number of nations where speakers of each language are found.

It is striking how dominant English is. 82 million individuals are studying French, the second most popular language to learn, compared to 1.5 billion who are learning English. There are 101 nations where English is spoken, which is about twice as many as French and three times as many as Chinese. The only language where there are more learners than native speakers is English.

Chinese has 1.39 billion native speakers, more than double the number of English speakers. With 30 million students, it ranks third in terms of popularity for language learning. Despite having 14.5 million less learners than Italian (8 million), Spanish has more than five times as many natural speakers as Italian. With 3 million learners, Japanese is the least studied of the available languages.

English is spoken in the most nations and is being learned by more people than all other languages put together. The majority of native speakers, meanwhile, are of Chinese. There doesn't seem to be much of a connection between the number of native speakers and the number of learners of a language, but there is a stronger link between the number of learners and how many countries have speakers.

Conclusion

There are rows and columns in a table. A cell is the point where a row and a column meet. Tables have many more functions in addition to being frequently used to arrange and present information. Tables may be used to align numbers in columns, sort them, and then use them in calculations. Additionally, utilise tables to produce visually appealing page layouts.
