What is an Interjection? List of Interjections

While interjections are often used in casual conversation, they can also be found in written English. In fact, you might be surprised at how often they are used in books, newspapers, and other formal texts.‍

An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses strong emotion or is used to emphasize a statement. It gives more meaning to a sentence.

Interjections are commonly used in spoken English and can be categorized as follows:

Exclamations: Oh! Wow!

Oh, the interjection is used to express surprise, disbelief, or joy.

Commands: Stop! Watch out!

The interjection is used to give a warning or demand attention.

Questions: Huh? What?

The interjection is used to express confusion or to ask for clarification.

Emotions: Alas! Hurrah!

The interjection expresses feelings such as sorrow, happiness, or excitement.

Interjections are not always easy to categorize, and there are many that can fall into more than one category. For example, the interjection "ouch" can be used to express pain, but it can also be used as a command ("Ouch, stop doing that!").
