What is Adverb Phrase?

When an adverb phrase is used to modify another adverb, it is usually placed after the adverb it is modifying. For example, in the sentence "He drove slowly but carefully," the adverb phrase "slowly but carefully" modifies the adverb "drove."‍

  1. An adverb phrase is a phrase that consists of an adverb and any modifiers. Adverb phrases can be used to modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
  2. Adverb phrases typically come after the word or phrase they are modifying. 

For example, in the sentence "He ran quickly down the street," the adverb phrase "quickly down the street" modifies the verb "ran."

  1. Adverb phrases can be of different lengths, and they can be made up of multiple words. 

In the sentence "She talked slowly and deliberately," the adverb phrase "slowly and deliberately" modifies the verb "talked."

  1. Adverb phrases can also be used to modify adjectives. In the sentence "The cat is very cute," the adverb phrase "very cute" modifies the adjective "cute."

Types

There are four main types of adverb phrases: manner, degree, duration, and frequency.

  1. Manner adverb phrases describe how something is done. For example, "He ran quickly down the street." 
  2. Degree adverb phrases express the intensity or degree of something. For example, "She's quite angry with her boss." 
  3. Duration adverb phrases indicate how long something lasts. For example, "We only have a few minutes to spare." 
  4. Frequency adverb phrases tell how often something happens. For example, "They usually go to the movies on Fridays."

Examples
  1. Down the street he ran quickly.

           In this sentence, the adverb phrase down the street comes before the verb ran.

           When an adverb phrase modifies an adjective or another adverb, it usually comes after the word it modifies.

  1. The flowers were very beautiful.

            In this sentence, the adverb phrase very beautiful comes after the adjective flowers.

  1. I put my coffee cup down slowly.

            In this sentence, the adverb phrase slowly comes after the adverb down.
