Types of gerund

There are three main types of gerunds: verbal, participial, and infinitive.

1. Verbal gerunds are the most common type of gerund. They are derived from verbs and function as nouns. For example, the verb “read” becomes the gerund “reading.” Verbal gerunds can be used as the subject or object of a sentence, as in the following examples:

Subject: Reading is my favorite hobby.

Object: I enjoy reading books.

2. Participial gerunds are derived from verbs and function as adjectives. For example, the verb “write” becomes the gerund “writing.” Participial gerunds can be used to describe a noun, as in the following example:

The writing on the wall was ominous.

3. Infinite gerunds are derived from verbs, but they function as adverbs. For example, the verb “walk” becomes the gerund “walking.” Infinitive gerunds can be used to modify a verb, as in the following example:

He likes to walk in the park.
