What is Compound-Complex Sentences?

If you're not sure how to go about constructing a compound-complex sentence, don't worry – it's not as difficult as it sounds. Just remember to start with two independent clauses, and then add on a dependent clause.
Definition

A compound-complex sentence is a sentence that has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence, whereas a dependent clause cannot.

A dependent clause needs an independent clause to complete its meaning.

Why are compound complex sentences important?

One of the benefits of knowing how to construct a compound-complex sentence is that it allows you to express more than one idea in a single sentence. This can be useful when you want to communicate a lot of information in a single sentence without sounding repetitive or monotonous.

Another benefit of compound-complex sentences is that they can make your writing sound more sophisticated. This is because they require a higher level of grammatical knowledge to construct correctly. As such, they can make your writing appear more intelligent and thought-out.

  • I'm going to the store, and I'm going to pick up some milk.
  • After I finish my work, I'm going to go home.
  • Unless you finish your work, you can't go home.
  • I'm going to the store to pick up some milk, and I'm going to go home after I finish my work.
  • Although she was tired, she decided to stay up and study for her test.

Conclusion

In other words, a compound-complex sentence is made up of a combination of simple and complex sentences.
