Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Present Perfect Continuous Tense is a tense which is used to indicate an action that began in the past and has lasted or continued until the present moment. It is also known as the present perfect progressive tense. It uses the auxiliary verb i.e., has been or have been + present participle.

Examples:

·        I have been writing this article for three hours

·        Jacob has been singing in the band for two years

·        Gary has been teaching at the school since February. 

When to use Present perfect continuous tense?

1. Duration of the action from the past until present

Example: She has been playing football at the club for three years.

It means that she started playing football for the club three years before and is still playing it (continuous).

2. Events occurring recently

Example: I have been falling ill more often, lately

It means that nowadays one is falling ill more.

3. ‘since’ and ‘for’ usage in sentence

Example 1: My grandfather has been living in Mumbai since 2008.

It means that we know a definite time from when he was living in Mumbai that is 2008.

 

Example 2: Tyler has been waiting for the cab for one hour now.

It means that we know the amount of time for which she waited for the cab that is one hour.
